Data Sources:

  • U.S. Census Bureau, Census of Population and Housing, 1990 and 2000
  • U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey, 2004–2010 (urban county estimated population change)
  • U.S. Census Bureau, Decennial Census, 2010

Explanations and Caveats:

    • The boundaries of many of the cities and villages in Franklin County have changed since 1990 as a result of annexation. In 2010, these jurisdictions included larger geographic areas than they did in 1990.
    • The American Community Survey (ACS) is conducted annually by the U.S. Census Bureau and replaced the Census Long Form in 2010. It is intended only as an estimate of the population rather than a definitive count. Since 2008 the ACS has included the population living in group quarters, such as college residence halls, group homes, military barracks, correctional facilities, workers’ dormitories, and homeless shelters. Group quarters populations tend to have different demographic and socioeconomic characteristics than does the general public. The Census of Population and Housing is conducted once every 10 years and also includes the population living in group quarters.
    • ACS data are not available for Franklin County cities other than Columbus.
    • In 2011 the villages of Canal Winchester, Groveport, and New Albany became cities as a result of the 2010 Census. Under Ohio law, a village automatically becomes a city once its population exceeds 5,000 persons.
