The following are key points from the data in the tables and graphs found on the “Data” tab. The “Sources and Notes” tab provides additional information about the data.

  • The Franklin County poverty rate in 2010 was 18.6%, up almost six percentage points from 2004.
  • In 2010 the county had 212,815 people living in poverty, 46,254 more people than just two years prior.
  • Families in Franklin County had a poverty rate of 14.2% in 2010. Poverty rates were higher for families with related children living in the home, including 28.3% of families with a child under age five. Six in 10 female-headed households with young children (61.1%) were in poverty.
  • In 2010 the black population in Franklin County had a poverty rate of 33.4%, compared to a 13.8% rate for whites. Hispanics and Asians had poverty rates of 29.6% and 14.1%, respectively.
