The following are key points from the data in the tables and graphs found on the “Data” tab. The “Sources and Notes” tab provides additional information about the data.

  • The percentage of all Franklin County births that were to females age 10–17 years decreased from 4.2% (687 total) in 1998 to 2.9% (513 total) in 2004, increased to 3.2% (591 total) in 2006, and slightly decreased to 3.0% (549 total) in 2008.
  • There continues to be a disparity in the percentage of teen births by race although it is lessening. In Franklin County in 2008, 5.0% of all births to black mothers were to mothers age 10-17. For whites, 2.4% of all births were to mothers age 10-17.
  • Franklin County births to mothers age 14 and under decreased 25.1% from 1998 to 2008; births to teens aged 15–17 decreased 32.1% over the same time period. These decreases in teen births occurred against an overall increase in Franklin County births of 11.2%.
